August read: Soledad Brother ✨📖
Theme for August: Remember. Study. Build.
This August, Dope Lit Book Club joins the tradition of Black August, time of remembrance, political education, reflection, and continued study of Black liberation movements and the people who shaped them.
Our August read, Soledad Brother: The Prison Letters of George Jackson, brings us directly into that history. Written during Jackson’s incarceration, these letters chronicle his political awakening and evolving ideas about racism, capitalism, incarceration, resistance, and revolution. The book is both deeply personal and unapologetically political, asking us to consider how systems shape people and what it means to develop consciousness while living within those systems.
Our reading extends beyond the page on Saturday, August 29 from 6–9 PM, when Analog Dope and MoreThanAHashtag LV present the Black August Book Fair. Through books, poetry, music, art, and letter writing to political prisoners, we’ll gather to honor freedom fighters, abolitionists, and political prisoners while connecting their histories to the work and conversations happening today.
